Chemical identification
Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is a toxin produced by fresh water cyanobacteria. It is the most toxic of the microcystins, tumor promoter, and potent and selective inhibitor of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A). It is considered to be cell-impermeable with the exception of hepatocytes which take it up via an organic anion pump. Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is a strong hepatotoxin. It is also a suspected Reproductive toxicity agent.
